CHAPTER 10

The urgency with which Kate pulled me to my feet suggested that we were about to take immediate action. My confusion when she dragged me into the dining room and began serving out a large plateful of lasagna for herself was evident on my face.

“Do we need to go and save him?” I asked.

“If you think I'm getting in the middle of a werewolf fight on an empty stomach then you're crazy,” she said shoveling a forkful into her mouth as she sat down. Ryder pulled out a chair for me to sit down but I stayed on my feet. Effie and Sage were now also helping themselves to lasagna, nodding in agreement.

“Does anyone want to tell me what's going on? I feel like you just told me the Miller was lying in a ditch somewhere with a bullet wound and that sounded serious, what are you all doing?” I asked.

“Like your friend said, you can't step into the middle of a battle between wolves and their hunters on an empty stomach,” Sage nodded. “No immediate action from you is required, child. I can sense that the best thing we can do is hang tight, things will become clear soon.”

“Ryder, a little backup would be nice,” I said, exasperated. He didn't really say anything, he just folded his arms. “You're from a family of hunters, you also seem pretty keen on keeping Miller and I apart. The skeptic in me is considering that maybe you knew that they were coming after him today, the skeptic in me is saying that you wouldn't help him even if you could. Is this how low you're willing to sink?”

I'd spat the words out as if they were poisonous, the rage and frustration building to a point where I felt I'd lost control of it. I could see that what I'd said had wounded him, but he'd get over it. Miller was actually hurt wasn't he? He needed me, I couldn't leave him out there on his own and if no one else was going to take this seriously then I'd have to figure out how to find him by myself.

“He's not dead.” That was all Ryder said to me, three little words and no more.

“No, he's not dead. Did I not say that? I feel like I said that,” Kate said between forkfuls.

“You must have missed that part out,” I said bluntly.

“Silver bullets are obviously a big deal if you’re a werewolf, and to be honest they’re not great for witches either. If a silver bullet hit Miller in the heart, then he’d be dead. He’s not dead, which suggests that the bullet hit him elsewhere,” Effie explained.

“If a bullet hit anyone in the heart, then they’d die,” I replied, confused.

“That’s a solid point, why has no one brought that up before?” Effie said, jabbing her fork upward to punctuate her surprise. “Silver bullets are rare, the hunters make their own. They are harmful to wolves and witches and many of the islands have banned them entirely.
